A luxury watch is so much more than just a fashion statement; it’s an investment, one that showcases your prestige and a love for the finer things in life.

When properly cared for, you can enjoy your luxury timepiece for years to come and turn it into an heirloom that can be passed down to future generations.

Take note of these expert tips to ensure your investment is always protected.

Regular Cleaning Is Essential

Regularly cleaning your watch will prolong its life. Fortunately, this is a simple process. All you need is a clean cloth that you can use to wipe down the case and strap. You can add some water to the mix, but only if your watch is water resistant.. Soaking it in water can help remove stubborn dirt.

Schedule a Service

Cleaning will only go so far in maintaining your timepiece – it also requires regular service to keep it in prime working condition. If you own a mechanical watch, and depending on its age, aim to service it every two years to four years. Quartz watches only require a service every four to five years, but batteries should be changed as soon as they’re dead. A leaking battery can cause permanent damage!

Treat It with Care

Once you invest in a luxury timepiece, you want to do everything you can to treat it with care. If you’re going to be involved in any high-impact activities, it’s best to leave your watch at home. This will prevent scratches and any damage to the internal components. It’s also recommended that you don’t wear your watch to the gym or the beach as this also increases the risk of costly or permanent damage.

Wearing a watch in saunas and hot tubs should also be avoided if possible.

Be Wary of Chemical Contact

Harsh chemicals are another factor you should be aware of when caring for your watch. Avoid exposing it to harsh perfumes, soaps and detergents as much as possible. These can damage both the case, strap.and gaskets. Avoid wearing your watch in the showeer or while bathing if possible.

Avoid Prolonged Periods of Sun Exposure

While the sun won’t cause major damage to your watch in general, prolonged periods of exposure to harsh rays can. Not only will it cause your straps to fade, but it can reduce battery life too.

Store It Correctly

Any time you’re not wearing your timepiece, it should be stored neatly and securely. An expensive watch should never be placed face down or anywhere it can fall. Ideally, you want to store it in its original box or a storage case that’s specifically designed for watches.

Steer Clear of Strong Magnets

A watch that’s exposed to magnets can start to run very fast or come to a complete stop. Even though these are issues that can be fixed, it’s unnecessary and can easily be avoided.

Avoid contact with smartphones, ipads, tablets, Hi-Fi equipment, speakers, PC’s and any other piece of modern tech that contains magnets.

Be Careful Around Water

Even though most luxury watches have some degree of water resistance, it’s still advisable to be mindful of the limits of your timepiece. Where one watch can handle 1,000 metres, others can’t withstand more than 30.

Over and above these expert tips, it’s recommended that you thoroughly read your watch’s user manual to fully understand the functionality and care instructions.
