Iconic Watches: True Vintage Classics (part one)

The last decade has ushered in a new era of innovative design and technologies in the watch market. With the dawn of the smart watch fast approaching it is important to remember some of the truly iconic watches that have gone before and which remain timeless classics.

The Omega Flightmaster 1969 is a true vintage classic and one of the iconic watches of its era. An original aviator watch, production of the Flightmaster began in 1969 and unfortunately proved to be short-lived, finally coming to a halt in the mid 70’s. The original Flightmaster had a total of 7 working colour-coded hands, and a notable feature of this iconic watch is the fact that it was markedly larger than other watches of its era. Recent years have seen an increase in the popularity of cult classics such as the original Omega Flightmaster and you can expect to pay around £3,000 to get your hands on one.

Another iconic watch, considered a true classic, is the original Rolex Submariner, which first went on sale to the public back in 1954. Early models included the 6200 Submariner thought to have been worn by Sean Connery during his title role as James Bond in the 1962 film Dr No. This iconic watch remains highly collectable and has served as the inspiration for numerous subsequent Rolex models. According to an article published in the Telegraph one of the first Rolex Submariner model watches, owned by a Scottish builder, reportedly sold for a staggering £60,000 pounds at auction.

These classic watches highlight the fact that a watch truly is an investment and that high quality design and craftsmanship never goes out of fashion. Whatever watch you own, it is important to make sure it remains in top quality condition, and one day you may be lucky enough to be the owner of your own iconic vintage classic.
