As a jewellers in Glasgow that offers a brilliant design and repair service, we understand how much people love and value their special jewellery, no matter the value. Because of this, we have put together some top tips for keeping yours in tip top condition!
Don’t Wear Your Jewellery Every Single Day
This one obviously doesn’t apply for your engagement or wedding ring, but when it comes to the rest of your jewellery, you should avoid wearing them every single day. Apart from increasing the risk of damage, it can also cause the metal to fade quicker over time.
You should also avoid wearing it when doing everyday things such as washing the pots, washing your hands, painting or taking a shower. We also suggest taking off when sleeping and exercising too. Remember to keep it safe when you remove!
Jewellery Should Be Stored In a Safe Place
When you’re not wearing your jewellery, it should be stored in a safe place. This should be in cool dark place as jewellery left in the open is likely to tarnish. This could be a box or safe – anywhere in which you know it is secure. You should have a certain spot for your jewellery, instead of storing it in different places. This will make it harder to misplace.
However, all jewellery should be stored on their own. Use divided compartments or felt bags for the individual jewellery, as they will scratch against each other.
Avoid Contact With Chemicals
Make sure that your jewellery doesn’t come into contact with any kind of chemicals. This means avoiding things such as chlorine, seawater, hairspray and perfume. We suggest putting your jewellery on after you’ve got dressed and done your hair!
Cleaning products that you use to clean your house can also ruin gold and silver – so avoid wearing your jewellery when cleaning.
One last thing – don’t try to repair anything by yourself. It’s important that you get it checked over by a professional.
